6 Tips For Effective Communication

1. Be On Time

Show up on time, get to the point, and don't keep other people waiting. It shows that you're considerate of their time and that you're interested in them.

2. People Are Most Interested In Themselves

We all are. To understand other people and what makes them tick, you must first understand yourself and be aware of what motivates you. Know what you want. Then find ways that you can help others. What sets effective communicators apart is the fact they understand this and don't focus on themselves. They concentrate on how they can help other people get what they want.

3. Learn To Speak Well

Speaking well starts with thinking clearly. Have a clear idea of the message you want to convey. Articulate it with confidence, being mindful of your cadence, tone, pitch, and enunciation. The only way to become good at it is to practice, practice, practice. It makes a tremendous difference and you will notice that other people will begin respond to you differently as you improve.

4. Dress Appropriately

Appearances make a difference. An upbeat attitude, good posture, good grooming, and a neat, well put together outfit is an important part of your image. Superficial as that may seem, it's all that people who don't know you have to go on at first. It also encourages you to live up to the expectations set forth by such an image.

5. Network

You never know how and where you'll meet people you can help, or who can help you. Always be prepared. Have a sunny disposition, be interested in others, and have a pen and business cards handy. If you really want to grow your network, join a trade association in your industry and attend their meetings, shows and conventions. You're guaranteed to meet lots of receptive people with the same area of interest.

6. Keep In Touch

Stay in touch with your contacts by periodically reviewing your list, and making note of when you were last in touch. Focus on what you can do for them, how you can help make their lives easier by solving their problems or connecting them with people you know who can solve their problems. They will appreciate it, and you'll build a relationship. Down the road if you need a favor, they'll be happy and able to help you or refer you to someone who can. Relationships my friend, relationships are what it's all about.
